Mammoth/Lost boys

kelconimi, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

We started the day investigating a S facing gully on the north side of lost boys pass. There was noticeable wind slab in this area which failed on a planar break on the recent storm/crust interface at CT2 and propagated on our extended column test- ECTP4. We didn’t ski the gully. As we crossed to the south side of lost boys pass we saw shooting cracks on convex, wind-affected features, one propagating 20m with a little whumph and with a second crack the same length several meters below us. Mammoth head NW slopes were much less wind-affected, particularly at lower elevations. CT had variable results from CT2-20, probably due to the size difference of the people testing and likely buried ski tracks, the failure was on the recent storm/crust interface but wasn’t planar. Slab properties increased at higher elevations. Released a few little slabs (roughly 3m2) on the way down, passed some that were released yesterday. But good skiing was had here.
