Quick Observation

At the highway there is only about 20cm of snow, with a melt-freeze crust on the surface that slowly gets thinner and gets increasingly deeper snow on top (up to 10cm), before it disappears around 1200m. Below tree-line we did not observed any cracking, shearing or whumphing all day, although we could see lots of old fracture lines from the most recent avalanche cycle. At tree-line the snow was very reactive on the late January surface hoar down 50-60cm, with whumphing, cracking, remote triggered avalanches (from about 5m away), and ski cuts on north aspects. See "Snowpack" for snow pit results.

Snowpack

North facing gully at TL, 15 degree incline; CTM11(SP) ECTP14 down 55cm on 5mm SH and FC.
