Today we went up Raven Lake to check things out. The alpine is pretty wind affected on all aspects so we stuck to tree skiing where the snow has remained sheltered and soft. At tree line we found surface hoar that had been knocked over in the open places affected by wind. We decided to test some small slopes where winds have deposited snow and found shooting cracks in the hard slabs that sat over these feathery crystals. This layer is still shallow so it isn’t a big concern yet but will be something to keep in mind during the next few snowfalls. We saw lots of caribou tracks but somehow they evaded us.
