Snow Zone conditions

albertocsanz, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Supportive crust (~5cm) present at all elevations and aspects we skied (up to ~2200m N aspects). Low density cold uncohesive snow was sitting on top of the crust (up to 15 cm Saturday depending on aspect, with 10 cm more by end of afternoon Sunday) and not bonding well. Made for challenging skinning but pretty good skiing. Saturday remained cold, but by Sunday late afternoon things warmed up to near 0C at 1900m and snow became more moist. Saturday April 3rd we skied into the alpine bowl where snow had been conserved. At higher elevations we saw lots of snow transport to N aspects. Sunday April 4th we skied the Channel ridge - West aspects had less dust and we hit the crust on every turn. East aspects had accumulated more snow and made for great skiing. Snowing all day. No signs of warming nor slabbing by the time left (3PM) but with the additional load, wind and warm up this will likely change.
