Went to floe creek area today on the 93s, hs was 115cm after crossing the kootany River, went up the due north aspect shoulder at the start of the creek. Was - 3 at the car at 9:15am at 1315m elev, a temp crust was present until about 1450m, which had broken down and became quite soft by later day 2:30pm. Temps went to +3 in the parking lot by 3pm. Completely diff weather to Banff and was quite pleasent. Overcast with sunny spots great vis could see many km down the highway and see floe lake area from the shoulder, only climbed to 1885m before turning around due to life and having a deadline for the walk up, any ski track that may have been there was not present trail breaking was about 20cm ski pen or more most day. Portions of the ridge around 1700m n higher felt previously wind loaded and buried slabs where noted. We recieved one large whoomf in this area on the way up. A soft slab was noticed from 1500m on to when we stoped. Storms slabs. cracking and slight propagation of a buried old snow facet layer approx 30 down that wasn't bonding at all, occouring on the way up with the touch of skis, unsupported pockets on logs would shed and crack willingly all day, the snow coverage there is nice for what the ground looks like and holds good anchoring currently and didn't provide any Chance for slabs to run anywhere. Terrain is between 25-30 degrees with lots of dead fall and Christmas trees between the burns but skies fantastically. Avoided steeper and more open slopes facing the drainage higher up as there wasn't much confidence in the snow pack bieng my first time there this season and all the signs of storm instability present. Didn't dig a pit today we skied down near our uptrack. Didn't prob to get an average depth up higher Either. Winds were running wsw light to moderate at times and some gusting of strong winds occurred for small portions of the day. ( turbulent suspension noted) winds seemed to be blowing snow in the alpine.... On another note spent the previous week around the Hamilton lake, sherbrook lake area and mt field in yoho. Was at sherbrook during the large wind event, knocked a couple size 2s out of the u skiable terrain on Ogden with large powder clouds running couple hundred of meters or more, not crossing the bench or the skin track to the bowl at the back. Depths were 230cm at 2100m. At Hamilton lake area the south east shoulder of carnarvon, snow depths at 2100m were 230cm as well, well bridge from what felt to the facet weakness at about 150cm down probing around, may be different with this current storm as that info is a week old. Mt field at 2100m had a 210cm snow pack. Stopped at tree line all days accept canervon we topped out on the ridge there at 2560m using the lower angle terrain. Very Large cornices lingering in all Lee alpine features visable in tm field and Hamilton lake zones...... Play safe out there everyone!
