Quick Observation

It didn't feel like mid April up in Allen Creek today. Temperatures stayed cool at -4 and a moderate southerly wind chilled things down too. The snow surface stayed dry even on sunny aspects. We saw several cornice-triggered avalanches on north and east facing slopes across from the riding area. (All the photos are taken through a scope.) It's hard to guess the ages of these avalanches, or what the weak layer they failed on was, but seeing so many made us more cautious riding in the alpine than we have been the last couple days. We suspect that when we finally do get a big warm up and some of those classic April warm days kick in, more cornices will drop - potentially triggering large slabs.
