Surprisingly Pow-some!

southrockies, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

At Mear Lake today on the sleds up to 2,000m and the skins up to 2,300m. Skiing was good on 20cms of dryer-than-expected storm snow ….. We saw numerous natural avalanches up to size 2 from Tuesday, but didn’t get any meaningful results ourselves from snowpack tests or from ski-cutting smaller no-consequence rolls. HOWEVER, we did trigger whumpfs in a sheltered flat area at 2,050m, suggesting that its not all peaches+cream ! We found the loose mid-February facets down 30cms, which, although they weren’t a problem today, could be a weak layer once the storm snow settles into a slab, or gets pushed into a slab by wind.
