Respect your alders

AvCan Northwest, Tuesday 19th December, 2023 5:20PM
Today we went sled skiing at Seaton. It was snowing lightly throughout the day, with mostly calm conditions. We did not see any new avalanches, although we couldn’t see all of the alpine terrain. We saw the use of many treeline slopes by snowmobiles. There is about 15 cm of new snow from this last storm. We did not find any slab quality in this new snow and enjoyed some nice turns on north-facing slopes. We were able to find a layer of weak, feathery crystals (known as surface hoar) at treeline, buried 30 cm deep. This layer did not produce propagating Extended Column Test (ECT) results today, but it does still fail in Column Tests (CT). We are still monitoring this layer.
