Fish/2000/Liverwurst

mjhouwers, Tuesday 21st January, 2025 11:00AM
Very cold day on Tuesday especially with the chill of moderate winds (looked quite strong at the peak and there was definitely snow transport). Skied fish from the resort bootpack, skinned up 2000 to treeline, skied back down via Liverwurst to a bit below lake level before traversing around for the lower part to catch a bit of sun on the ridge into fish again. Snow was variable but mostly quite good. Packed, chalky, wind affected pow in exposed parts, 5-10cm of transported fluff on the wind chalk in others, and boot deep, cold fluffy pow in sheltered areas (primarily gullies in the trees). Didn’t do any instability tests as I have done a few in this area in the past weeks with no results (ECTX) and not much has changed. There was the occasional 5-10cm fresh wind slab on the chalk, which was breaking and sliding in steeper pitches and also made gripping on the skin track tricky in places. Did a couple of quick hand shear tests on the way up and everything except the small fresh wind slab mentioned above was bonded really well. Saw a small size 1 on the NE side of 2000 that was rider triggered by another group. Appeared to be that new top wind slab and it ran the full length (100m) of the tight, small gully that it was triggered in. Overall the skiing was great! If you want fresh pow turns they are still definitely there! Just find the gullies in the trees a bit more on the leeward side of the main ridges.
