1st Peak was 1st Class !

southrockies, Friday 10th February, 2023 4:20PM

Great day out today in the Big Sand area, sledded up to 1700m, from where we continued climbing on our skis up through soft snow, amongst heavily rimed trees to ridgeline at 2,000 m. Snowpack depth at treeline was 2 metres, but thinned out dramatically on our descent after about 1650 m. At ridgeline and in open areas at treeline, the upper snowpack consisted of two or three layers of soft windslab, each up to 15 cm thick. We weren’t able to ski cut 'em, but they were evident in hand-shears. With good visibility into the Alpine, we were able to see evidence of previous strong winds, but no natural avalanches. It stayed cool at treeline, with light to moderate SW winds and overcast skies; while temps in the valley climbed to well above zero.
