Crowfoot Mountain

anthony.stielow, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Toured up to Crowfoot mountain on Sunday. From the parking lot up to treeline everything was as expected, passable but thin coverage. The moraines were mostly windswept with a mix of hard crusts and the occassional small pocket of blown around powder. Not aweful skiing on the moraines, but not good either. As we got on to the glacier we probed like crazy people, suspecting areas of thin coverage. To our suprise , we never found less than 115 cm snow depth and up to 150 cm in some places. There was even a few fun turns to be had on the way down the glacier. Above the glacier, on the west facing upper slopes of crowfoot, was a different story. It's an icy sheet of wind/sun crust sitting on 50cm of facets. It was mostly cleaned off by the wind but we were still able to ski all the way to the summit. Needless to say, the ski quality on the way down was terrible. West Alpine winds were, best guess, 40km/hr with 60km/hr gusts. Overall a beautiful sunny day and a great touring day...just not much great skiing to be had.
