Bluebird Day If You Know Where To Look

southrockies, Tuesday 7th January, 2025 12:00PM
Today at Mear Lake we observed size 1 and 1.5 natural wind slabs in the alpine on south aspects, with sun being the trigger. The snowpack was 80 cm deep and faceted, but quite well settled. We didn't find any weak layers within the snowpack. We observed large surface hoar in shady and sheltered areas, but on steep solar aspects, the surface hoar was less visible and becoming smaller. The valley fog made for a cold start to the day, but the conditions above the fog were sunny and warm. There was moderate wind at 2200 m with little snow transport.
