Good to be back skiing on rainy Vancouver island

kai, Monday 23rd December, 2024 12:00PM
Went for a casual tour up around washy today and boy does it feel good to be skiing in a “coastal” snowpack again. Traveled between 1100-1500m. A “mostly”supportive Melt freeze crust (2-5cm thick) made for easy travel on the way up but horrendous travel on the way down. Wx: Light rain, light to moderate SE wind with overcast skies. Snowpack: West Aspect, 1500m 2-5cm thick crust that is generally supportive to skis. Below is a mix of rounded grains and Melt form crystal 4-1F which overlies a breakable 2cm thick melt freeze crust down 15cm. More rounded grains (1F) overlay a supportive 10cm thick Melt freeze crust down 30cm on Lee aspects and 10cm on windward slopes. Column tests produced repeatable easy sudden planar results within the new storm snow down 10-15cm as well as moderate resistant planar results down 30cm failing over the large melt freeze crust. 1 extended column tests produced fractures down 15 and 20cm but no propagation. Avalanche: No avalanches observed
