Flatiron Bowl and trees

jeremy, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

We rode some of the Flatiron Bowls and trees on Saturday. The day was cloudy with air temp about -7 in the alpine. The wind, however, was very strong and just about blew us over at times. Lots of wind transport right now and some wind slabs started to form. The ones we encountered were still soft enough to easily ski and just produced some small localized sloughing but I expect it'll be pretty crusty up there soon in many places. We did a test pit near the treeline on a north easterly aspect which produced results of CTM 12 and ECTN 29 with resistant planar fractures showing on the latest snow loading and down about 99cms on a hard layer. HS was 235 cm but quite a bit appeared from from wind loading even being sheltered in the trees. Overall, skiing was very good and the snow felt pretty solid throughout the day.
