auto: Quick Report

freeheelingbc, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Skied up to Magnesia shelter from the talus slope below the Harvey Ramp with 10 cm soft wet fresh snow overlying a less cohesive mush of 40+ cm of rain soaked melt/freeze rounds. Overlying snow got dryer as we reached the shelter- almost passable for skiing. Shelter was buried 1.5 meters above the roof peak. Noticed 1 meter crown on North side Harvey Mt below the cliffs. Avalanche size 2.5 Skied up over Harvey Col into Harvey basin to find that the entire NW slope west of the West Lion had avalanched. Size 3.5 with an estimated 1m+ crown. Slope North of Lions pass also failed with a size 2.5-3. Cornices on Harvey, the Lions Ridge and the east and West Lion are extremely large and have not failed yet. Use extreme caution on all Howe Sound Crest peaks this spring. Skied down south facing side of Harvey Basin with 300 m of quite nice skiing which devolved quickly at lower altitude into very wet, extremely heavy skiing, with loose slabs that would slowly chase us down the steeper pitches. Stay safe out there! Brent Calkin Lions Bay Search and Rescue
