Quick Observation

Across the valley from Shames Mountain, above the access road around 1350 metres we found 100 cm of recent storm snow settling above a thin (3cm) ice crust that had about 5 cm of facets below, before hitting a 20 cm thick rain crust. We observed compression tests results moderate and hard sudden collapse in the facets above the hard rain crust. The Shames avalanche path had run size 3.0 during the recent storm. Ski quality was reduced by wind effect in the alpine.
