We did some investigative work in the Elkford area today looking at snow amounts and the December facets. We found variable amounts of snow at similar treeline elevations from a deeper area of 220cm to as low as 120cm. The facets in the deeper snow pack looked like they were gaining strength but still were very visible down 120cm. We still aren't ready to trust them under large loads like cornice falls or in thin snowpack areas. We observed an natural avalanche cycle 24-48 hrs old up to size 2 in the storm snow. The 20cm of powder was denser than yesterday blower snow in the pass but still great sledding conditions.
