Clear, sunny, calm, air temps stayed below freezing. Strong solar radiation for January. Saw old avalanche activity from 1/13 running up to 70cm deep. Dug a pit at 2,700ft on an E-Aspect total snow height 150cm. Crust near the top with a 1F slab over 45cm of 4F facets to the ground. Less supportable melt-freeze crust above 3,500ft, more punchy with layers underneath. Snow quality was better on northeast aspects over the crust. The sunshine alone was worth a little schwacking.
