isolated

Today I mustered up enough motivation to travel above treeline to assess the wind slab problem and take advantage of visibility. The good news is that the wind slab problem is extremely isolated and stubborn to trigger. The bad news is that the snow is becoming saturated from rain and warming temperatures.

I stomped very hard on an east-facing wind drift and broke free a small slab. No other signs of instability were observed.

Above treeline, winds were calm with light gusts. Low clouds provided variable visibility. Temperatures stayed above freezing and no precipitation was observed.  Below treeline, light rain was experienced for 15 minutes. Winds were calm and temperatures above freezing. 

Snowpack

Saturated snow and wind scoured surfaces exist above treeline. In most areas, 10 inches (25cm) is present. In catchment zones, such as gullies and depressions, upwards of 30 inches (75cm) of snow can be found. Much less snow exits near and below treeline.
