Generally stable avalanche conditions exist throughout the forecast zone. While triggering an avalanche remains unlikely, exercise caution in steep alpine terrain where isolated pockets of wind slabs may still lurk. Reevaluate plans based on weather conditions. Expect variable surfaces.

    Recent weather has been mild. Winds and new snow have been non-productive in developing wind slabs. Today, another pulse of weather is expected, likely having minimal impact on avalanche danger. The greatest risk remains in extreme terrain, where isolated pockets of shallow wind slabs could sweep you off your feet and flush you down the mountain. Catchment zones like the sidewalls of deep gullies may also be areas harboring unstable snow.

    Many slopes hold varying levels of wind effect. Those with a stiffened surface over softer snow are worth evaluating. With an 80% chance of new snowfall at upper elevations, stay alert for changing conditions and keep your guard up.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday’s weather brought low clouds and poor visibility, making travel difficult, even below treeline. While this may not be the case today, it's an important factor to consider, aside from the generally low avalanche danger. A white-out on a 14,000-foot volcano is no joke, and conditions can change rapidly. Carrying navigation tools is essential to ensure a safe day in the mountains.

Recent observations on Gray Butte found various snow surfaces. Surprisingly, in protected areas near and below treeline, several inches of preserved powder can still be found. Other surfaces include dust on crust, breakable crust, and wind board. Overall, surfaces are variable but manageable, with some areas offering good conditions. Moving forward, this means snow will be available for transport when the wind does return.
