The first wave of weather this week brought significant precipitation but high snow levels, leaving a snowpack capped by widespread crust. Today’s new snow will fall on top of this firm bed surface. With feet of new snow expected over the next 24 hours and accompanied by strong southerly winds, avalanche danger will rise quickly. Storms like this have produced large, full-path avalanches in popular recreation areas on the south side of Mount Shasta. Today is not the day to travel in or near avalanche terrain—allow time for the snowpack to settle before heading into steep terrain.
