In sintesi

Avalanche danger is moderate. Natural avalanches are unlikely, but human triggered avalanches are possible. Be prepared for cold temperatures and strong winds. Everitt Memorial Highway and Castle Lake Road are closed.

Avalanche danger is moderate. Natural avalanches are unlikely, but human triggered avalanches are possible. Evaluate leeward areas carefully. With 13 inches of new snow and 1-4 inches on the way, you may find wind slabs building. W-N-E slopes will be the most suspect, but mountain winds are variable, so pay attention to how much snow is accumulating and where it is blowing. Test for wind slabs by stomping on wind drifts and roll overs in safe terrain. If you see blocking or shooting cracks, then wind slabs may be forming in the lee of ridges.

Avalanche Discussion

Storm totals were lower than expected, but up to 13 inches of snow has fallen since Tuesday. Because they are short lived, triggering storm slabs and loose dry sloughs are unlikely, but I'd still be cautious on slopes over 35 degrees.

Castle Lake Road and Everitt Memorial Highway are closed. We'll keep you updated on their status through email, our website, and social media.
