Avalanche danger will increase as you transition to above treeline regions. West and northwest winds have and will continue to build sensitive slabs in steep terrain.

    As you transition from below treeline to above, avalanche danger will increase to considerable. Natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are likely.

    Active wind loading on easterly aspects has been observed and is likely to continue today with plenty of light density snow available for transport. Wind loaded areas were touchy to ski cuts. Look for this problem primarly on easterly slopes, but north and south facing aspects could be suspect, too. Stay clear of overhanging cornices.

    Test for wind slabs by stomping on wind drifts and roll-overs in safe terrain. If you see blocking or shooting cracks, then wind slabs may be forming in terrain near you.

Avalanche Discussion

Below treeline and in more sheltered areas, approach steep slopes over 35 degrees with caution. Not much evidence of storm slabs or dry loose sloughs were found yesterday, but with the cold temperatures, these types of problems could linger. These types of avalanches would occur in new snow and could carry you into more dangerous terrain.

The road to Bunny Flat is open and plowed. Snow removal operations are likely to continue today. Drive safely and use chains or bring your 4WD rig.

Castle Lake Road is closed.
