In sintesi

The painful dry spell continues, with firm and icy conditions remaining the primary hazard. This is a serious situation and demands the utmost caution. Rime ice shedding onto slopes below adds to the risks, creating an even more dangerous environment on the upper mountain.

Climbing Mount Shasta under these conditions is absolutely not for beginners. Expert-level footwork and extensive experience with ice axe(s) and crampons are mandatory. Self-arrest is impossible on these unforgiving slopes. Attempting this climb without the necessary skills and preparation could be life-threatening. Stay off steep slopes unless you are fully equipped and experienced.

Current Conditions and Weekend Fun

Gear Check: Bikes? Kayaks? Dog leash and walking shoes? What recreational equipment have you swapped out for skis these days? While snow coverage in the backcountry remains decent, snow surface quality leaves much to be desired.

  • Snow Depth: Near treeline in the Old Ski Bowl, 82 inches of snow blanket the ground. On the west side, about 60 inches remain.
  • Snow Surface: Soft snow can be found in sunny, protected, lower-elevation areas, but overall, firm, crusty, and icy surfaces dominate the landscape. Avalanches? Couldn't buy one.
  • Climbing Conditions: Good for experienced climbers, but slide-for-life potential is extremely high. With a drastic cooling trend and northerly wind expected this weekend, these conditions are unlikely to improve.
  • Access: Everitt Memorial Highway is open to Bunny Flat / Castle Lake road is closed and gate shut, but plowed to Methodist Camp; bike access feasible / Pilgrim Creek Snowmobile Park is open, trails groomed / Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park is open, but plowed past warming hut to Pomeroy Creek due to logging.
