In sintesi

Rough and firm snow conditions plague the backcountry. Winds have released their grip for the time being and the primary hazard remains the riding conditions. A slip and fall on steep terrain in the upper elevations would be consequential. Near and below treeline surface hazards include brick-hard snow chunks, ice balls, and downed branches, riders should proceed cautiously. Warming temperatures and solar input will help soften snow surfaces.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Today general backcountry caution is advised
  • The Beacon checker below Gray Butte has been dug out and is operational
  • A solidified snowpack can still be dangerous if users are unprepared or ill-equipped. Set yourself up for success by matching your ability to the conditions and knowing what safety gear to carry and how to use it.
  • Everyday essential safety gear: beacon, shovel, probe. Condition-specific safety gear: ice axe, ski crampons/boot crampons, helmet
  • The Everitt Memorial Highway is OPEN. Castle Lake road is still CLOSED, but next for clearing
