In sintesi

As the weather settles, it remains possible to trigger a wind slab avalanche above treeline on Mount Shasta. Elevated danger exists near terrain features that promote drifting and in catchment zones. Watch for red flags and carefully evaluate the snowpack before committing to steep slopes. Thoughtful terrain selection and conservative travel practices will increase your safety margins. Variable surfaces and early-season conditions add an additional hazard.

    Ongoing and previous wind loading, including cross-loading, has created wind slabs of varying size and distribution on all aspects. Larger, denser, and more reactive slabs reside primarily on east aspects. Slabs will be most common just below ridgelines, in cross-loaded gullies, on concave terrain, and around rock outcrops. Wind-textured or lens-shaped snow surfaces are key indicators of a wind-loaded slope. Use snow and terrain observations to identify areas of concern, heed red flags, and favor mellow, wind-sheltered, or windward slopes to reduce your risk.

Avalanche Discussion

Over the last 24 hours, warm temperatures and rain have dampened the entirety of the snowpack near and below treeline. Overnight freezing temperatures likely caused surfaces to crust and become firm. If you choose to travel in the backcountry, whether on boards or machine, expect variable conditions. Surfaces likely improve with elevation. However, windward slopes may hold an icy glaze that could be hazardous in the wrong terrain. With a shallow snowpack and many exposed obstacles, the consequences of an avalanche or a slip and fall are significantly higher.  

Here's an observation from yesterday's field visit. 

For now, the Eddy Mountains, Castle Lake area, Pilgrim Creek and Deer Mountain Snowmobile Parks, Mount Shasta Nordic Center, and Snowman’s Hill don't hold a usable snowpack.
