In sintesi

Winter conditions will remain in effect today. New snow paired with strong southerly winds have formed drifts on northerly aspects above treeline. The current snowpack is still shallow and may be unforgiving to anyone caught in moving snow. Exercise caution in steep terrain near ridgelines and roll-overs. Clear indicators of unstable snow are shooting cracks, collapses, or recent avalanches.

    Today will be dynamic. Wind drifts and exposed surfaces are what's at play. Combining the two will not be friendly. Ridge-top winds have been blowing predominantly from a south and southeast direction, averaging 13 mph with a max gust of 42 mph. The new snow that has fallen above treeline will continue to be redistributed onto leeward aspects, with cross-loading occurring on west and east aspects. Drifts will grow in size and sensitivity as the day progresses. Many of the pre-existing snow surfaces above treeline were either firm, crusty, or scoured. It is unsure how the new snow will bond to the old snow surfaces. Fresh drifts will be possible to trigger from the weight of a single rider. Feel for firm snow above softer snow and use clues like actively blowing snow, wind lips, and wind-effected surfaces to assess for wind-loaded terrain. Be mindful of your surroundings. Large and sharp rocks lurk just beneath the snow surface. Coming into contact with such objects will not be fun and most likely traumatic.

Avalanche Discussion

The storm is in session! Long have we awaited the arrival of moisture, and now we're getting a healthy dose. Even with snow levels mainly confined to the higher elevations, this will greatly improve snow conditions on Mount Shasta and begin to build the snowpack in the surrounding mountains.  

Yesterday, a forecaster ventured up Green Butte Ridge to see how the storm was fairing and assess for wind slab development. View the observation HERE.
