A few inches of new snow fell over the past 24 hours, and blowing snow has been observed near and above treeline. Wind has been blowing primarily out of the SW-S-SE, averaging 10-15 mi/hr with gusts to 40+ mi/hr. The wind slab avalanche problem is most prevalent at mid and upper elevations, where slabs could be larger and more widespread. All told, we don't expect large avalanches to occur today, but it is wise to monitor the depth of wind deposited snow and remember that as wind slabs become deeper, resulting avalanches can increase in size and consequence.When visibility is poor near and above treeline, tools such as a slope angle shaded map can help you understand which slopes are steep enough to produce avalanches. Avalanche terrain begins on slopes over 30 degrees and most specifically on slopes 37–38 degrees. Wind slabs form in specific terrain and will not be found everywhere. Recognize leeward slopes and where wind blown snow is accumulating. Wind slabs typically form below ridge tops, bowls, high points and around features that catch blowing snow from cross-slope winds. Shooting cracks in wind drifted snow and/or signs of previous avalanches are good indicators that triggering a wind slab avalanche is possible.
