In sintesi

Unstable wind drifted snow remains a concern near and above treeline on leeward north, east, and south aspects. Exercise caution on steep slopes holding new and old wind deposited snow, specifically on the downwind sides of terrain features. Even small avalanches can have large consequences. Stay aware of your terrain and surroundings, and observe for red flags of avalanche danger. Stick to wind sheltered slopes to avoid this problem.

    A few inches of expected snowfall, along with increased west and northwest wind speeds, will keep wind slabs on leeward aspects near and above treeline the chief concern today. Wind can deposit snow three to five times faster than it can fall from the sky. As winds pick up, expect new drifts to form directly beneath ridgelines, cliff bands, and roll-overs. Instabilities will be most significant during or just after active wind loading. Cracking in wind-stiffened snow and blowing snow are red flags of avalanche danger. With a light amount of new snow available for transport, the size of drifts will likely remain small, with the potential for larger drifts in steep, shady, isolated sections of terrain. However, size all depends on wind speed and duration.

Avalanche Discussion

Four inches is the high end for snow totals near treeline today. With some luck and orographic help, this may come true. Remember, four inches can translate to double that in drifted locations. Evaluate conditions based on what you're observing to best gauge the development of this problem. 

Yesterday’s sunny skies allowed for the recent snowfall to settle. Field observations noted softening and dampening of surfaces on southerly-facing slopes by midday. With last night's freezing temperatures, a surface crust may have formed in some areas. Combine that with wind effect and today’s new snow, conditions may be variable.

The influx of cold temperatures has temporarily alleviated the wet-loose avalanche problem.
