Mount Shasta

Avalanche danger will be low until the area receives snowfall. Falling ice and rock are hazards for climbers on the upper mountain. Colder temperatures and breezy conditions will keep the snow surface firm today. 

Since October 1, 2021, Mount Shasta has received around 152 inches of snow. Most of this came in December, though both October and November got off to a good start with total snowfall at 61 inches and total snow depth peaking at 26 inches. Cold temperatures in December brought snow to elevations below 3,000 ft. A maximum snow depth of 82 inches was recorded on January 4th. The last snowfall in the area occurred on January 8th. Since then, continuous melt-freeze conditions and periodic wind events have created a well consolidated, uniform snowpack. The current depth of snow at the Old Ski Bowl is 62 inches, and there is 35-45 inches on the ground in the Castle Lake zone. Total precipitation for the season is 78% of normal, and 16% of normal for January 2022.
