Mount Shasta

You are unlikely to trigger an avalanche today. Exercise normal caution in the backcountry while being on the lookout for isolated areas of wind-drifted snow. In extreme terrain, near cliffs and ridgelines, watchout for shooting cracks and collapsing.

Yesterday on the Southside of Mount Shasta, northerly wind was strong below treeline and extreme near and above the treeline. Along prominent ridges such as Sargents and Casaval, the majority of dry snow was being blown up into the atmosphere and sublimating before having the chance to re-settle on the slopes below. Although we observed no wind slabs at this location, the fact here remains that powerful northerly winds and dry snow above the treeline means that wind slabs could be lurking in or near extreme terrain features. If you find soft snow, especially on steep slopes, approach with caution and evaluate for signs of instability before continuing. 

What you're more likely to find in the backcountry today is a widespread distribution of icy, firm, and wind scoured surfaces. Be sure to carry your crampons and an ice axe if climbing the upper ramparts of Mount Shasta and be ready to self-arrest in the event of slip and fall.
