In sintesi

A dusting of new snow and active west and northwest winds will create heightened avalanche conditions on leeward-facing slopes near and above treeline. Avoid areas with freshly formed drifts and watch for actively blowing snow and cracking and collapsing.

    The hiatus of spring-like weather is coming to a close. 2–4 inches of new snow, a 3,000-foot freezing level, and moderate to strong west and northwest winds are in store for today. Winds drifting new and old snow will be the main concern.  As dry snow becomes subjected to the wind, drifts will grow in size and distribution. Watch, and be ready for small drifts forming in start zones near and above treeline, with the potential for larger drifts to form among steep isolated terrain features. Be mindful of features that encourage drifting: ridgelines, rock outcroppings, and mid-slope depressions. Wind textured snow will tell you where the wind has been at work and freshly formed wind lips and cornices will point in the direction of wind loading.     Today's freezing temperatures mean that the new snow will fall on many crusty surfaces. This may be problematic, as these surfaces hold poor bonding capabilities and provide a slick bed surface for snow to slide on. Assess the snowpack before committing to avalanche terrain.

It's been a tranquil last few days, with great visibility. During which time, very large cornices have been observed on many ridgelines throughout the forecast zone. A friendly reminder to give these features plenty of space and respect.

Access to Bunny Flat and Mount Shasta remains prolonged. Alternative options for winter recreation include McBride Springs, the Nordic Center, Mount Shasta Ski Park and Pilgrim /Deer Mountain OSV parks. Snow machines have been using the FS 31 road and power lines to access the Old Ski Bowl. Riders, know your boundaries, it's your responsibility. Please drive slow through local neighborhoods.
