In sintesi

It’s unlikely, but not impossible, to encounter unstable wind-drifted or wet-loose snow today. Pockets of wind slab exist in extreme alpine terrain on all leeward north, east, and south aspects. Wet-loose instabilities will develop on solar-lit slopes near and below treeline during the warmest parts of the day. Cracking in wind-stiffened snow and wet, penetrable snow are key indicators to observe for and potentially avoid. Expect variable travel conditions.

    West and northwest winds have blown in earnest over the past 48 hours, leaving the majority of surfaces scoured. Above treeline, on leeward north, east, and south aspects, isolated pockets and islands of wind slab exist beneath ridgelines, and in depressions of steep terrain. These slabs may be small, but potentially deep. While it remains unlikely to trigger, the consequence of being knocked off your feet in steep terrain and going for a long slide, warrants caution. If you do encounter any semi-soft wind effected snow, approach with caution.

    Today, wet snow instabilities will be on the rise and most reactive during the warmest parts of the day. Southerly aspects near and below treeline will be the quickest to destabilize with the presence of sun and warm temperatures. The combination of a high freezing level, no overnight re-freeze, and seasonably warm temperatures will all contribute to weakening surfaces. This problem is not life- or limb-threatening, but could cause trouble in the wrong area. Look for slopes displaying wet surfaces with easy boot penetration. Roller balls and pinwheels indicate that surfaces are losing cohesion and are precursors to potentially larger avalanches. Decrease your exposure by steering around steep slopes or selecting shadier terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent observations on Mount Shasta have found variable surfaces on all aspects and elevations, with the majority being firm and hard. If traveling into steep alpine terrain, carry an ice axe and crampons.

Hopefully, surfaces will begin to soften near and below treeline over the coming days. However, above treeline will take more time.
