In sintesi

And we're off! Unfortunately, winter recreation is limited due to lack of snow, and no avalanche problems are forecasted for today. A period of active weather is on the doorstep however, and it's time to start building our snowpack. For now, the primary risk is human versus rocks, trees, stumps and bushes!

Avalanche Discussion

Winter recreation is not in full swing yet. Actually, we're hardly swinging at all. Snow coverage is slim to none for areas west of the interstate. On Mount Shasta and the east side, coverage is better, but many earthly obstacles exist.  About 10 inches of snow is on the ground near treeline on the mountain. Gullies are beginning to fill in. Wind exposed ridges and moraines are rocky. Existing snow surfaces are fairly smooth and supportable for skis.  The snowpack is mostly made of rain crusts and sugary, faceted snow. It is possible to ski on the mountain....but don't end your season before it begins.
