In sintesi

Continued light to moderate winds and cooler temperatures will extend the possibility of wind slab avalanches near and above treeline. Human triggered avalanches are possible, especially at higher elevations, where a large wind slab avalanche could still bury and kill you. If you choose to go above treeline today, choice of terrain will be key to mitigating your hazard. If in doubt, avoid terrain with possible wind effect or loading.

    Winds have spun around the compass in the last 24 hours, remaining light to moderate with occasional strong gusts. Wind loading or cross loading could be found on any exposed ridgeline or face near and above treeline. That being said, they will likely be shallow, isolated to local terrain features, and not connecting well to larger slopes. High above treeline, the hazard of a deeper wind slab still lurks and should not be underestimated. 

Avalanche Discussion

Today's overall hazard has dropped from yesterday's new snow and wind. The afternoon sun and warm temps squashed much of the new snow avalanche hazard near and below treeline. That being said, there still lurks a low probability, high consequence avalanche danger near and above treeline. The sun had less effect at higher elevations in the Mount Shasta area, resulting in continued moderate hazard. The eight to ten inches of new snow plus wind could result in a large, skier triggered avalanche that could bury and kill someone. Take caution as you step in to higher elevation terrain. If in doubt, stay off of slopes greater than 35 degrees. As a reminder, here are the 5 red flags of avalanche instability:

  • Recent avalanches 
  • Cracking, collapsing, whumphing sounds
  • Strong winds and wind loading slopes
  • Heavy snowfall within the last 24 hours
  • Rapid temperature change
