In sintesi

The avalanche danger is LOW and normal caution advised. Climbing season on Mount Shasta has arrived. This is the time of year when the main hazard is often hard, icy snow. A slip and fall without quick self-arrest could result in an uncontrollable fall. Carry an ice axe, crampons and helmet; know how to use them.Strong sunshine and temperatures above freezing will soften southerly facing slopes today. If things get warmer and wetter than expected, small, wet loose slides are possible. As always, stay away from massive cornices.

Normal caution

Fledglings, it's time to spread your wings and fly. Believe you can, and you're halfway there. Today is the last avalanche forecast of the season, and normal caution is advised. Tomorrow we will issue our spring statement. It's been a heck of a winter; we're still smiling. The doors of the avalanche center will close, but the lights remain on as we make the switch to climbing mode. Rangers are poised for a great spring ski and climbing season. We thank each one of you for the continued support over the decades, all the way back to the late 90's when the MSAC was being born. Spring is the time of year when the avalanche danger is dwindling, but anything is possible. Late season storms and/or very warm days can cause storm snow and wet loose avalanche problems. Always pay attention to those 5 Red Flags of Avalanche Danger that we preach so often. Expect continued mountain updates and climbing route observations via our climbing advisory page. As always, don't hesitate to give us a call or email with any of your trip planning needs.
