In sintesi

New snow and westerly winds will combine to form fresh wind slabs on leeward north, east, and south aspects near and above treeline. Watch for snow pilling up on the downhill sides of ridgelines, rollovers, and rock outcroppings. Assess for shooting cracks and how new snow is bonding to old. Steer around steep wind exposed terrain to reduce your exposure to this problem.

    The arrival of today's storm will cause new surface instabilities in the form of wind slabs. When it's snowing and blowing, you can expect wind slabs to form. This problem will be specific to leeward north, east, and south aspects near and above treeline. Terrain features like ridgelines, rock outcroppings, and convex slopes will promote wind loading and warrant caution. Slabs will form on the down wind sides of these features as the day progresses. Actively blowing snow, wind lips, and wind textured surfaces will point you in the direction of wind loading.

    Two factors will increase the sensitivity of wind slabs today.  First, new snow will fall on firm bed surfaces (specifically near and above treeline), making bonding difficult. Second, rising snow levels will cause heavier snow to fall atop softer snow, inverting the snowpack. Both factors could increase the likelihood and reactivity of this problem. Shooting cracks underfoot are a red flag! Evaluate leeward areas where wind blown snow is accumulating, and choose terrain accordingly. Avoid steep leeward wind exposed features to escape this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

Today's storm holds a lot of gusto in terms of wind and rising snow levels, which could turn conditions nasty in the second half of the day. Come prepared for variable weather and riding conditions.  

Yesterday, a tour up Green Butte Ridge found soft preserved powder snow lingering in forested areas below treeline. Above treeline, conditions took a dramatic turn to firm and slick surfaces. In wind exposed areas, surfaces consist of ice and wind board. In other semi-wind shelter areas, like lower Sun Bowl, surfaces were a bit softer and skis could make solid purchase.
