Avalanche danger will rise through the day as precipitation and strong winds continue. Human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury a person are possible on slopes steeper than 35 degrees in wind loaded terrain near and above treeline. If storm totals exceed 6 inches, watch for signs of surface instability in sheltered areas. Conservative decision-making, careful snowpack assessment, and simple terrain choices will reduce your exposure to these problems.

    Last night, the Old Ski Bowl picked up about 2 inches of new snow with another 5 to 6 expected throughout the day. Sustained moderate to strong WNW winds overnight may have formed fresh wind slabs on S through E through NE aspects. Winds shifted more SW early this morning and are expected to continue in that orientation before shifting W later this afternoon. Suspect aspects are highlighted on the rose. Wind slabs will be confined to slopes greater than 35 degrees on the leeward side of ridges, rock outcrops, gullies, and rollovers. Areas directly beneath prominent ridgelines will hold the deepest drifts.

    Use inconsequential test slopes to gauge the snow’s stability. Shooting cracks underfoot or machine indicate unsafe conditions and should direct you to simpler terrain. Look for clues such as fresh cornices, wind pillows, and blowing snow to alert you to potential wind slab locations. Windward slopes and scoured terrain will offer the safest riding. Given the strong winds forecast today, exposed openings below treeline may also harbor small wind slabs. 

    If more than 6 inches of snow accumulate from last night through the day, sheltered areas near and below treeline may begin to form storm slabs and/or dry loose avalanches. Cracking and sluffing in the surface snow are signs that the hazard is increasing. While expected to be small-in-size, be aware of terrain features beneath you that could increase the hazard of getting caught, such as cliff bands or terrain traps.

Avalanche Discussion

Over the last few days, the forecast zone has received over a foot of new snow in many places. Graupel layers have been identied within Feb. 14 - 16 snow and at the interface the Feb. 11-12 snow. In days prior, this layer has shown easy propagation in test results, but was less reactive yesterday. Today, it is most likely to be a concern in wind loaded terrain directly beneath ridgelines where it is receiving the most substantial load. Smaller avalanches that fail in the new snow could also step down into these layers. Yesterday, a crown was identified from Bunny Flat on a ridgeline above the Powder Bowl drainage. The avalanche appears to have failed about one to two feet deep, pressumably on the lowermost graupel layer and propagated a hundred or so feet wide.
