Generally stable avalanche conditions exist. Isolated wet loose avalanche activity remains possible during peak daytime temperatures. Cornice fall, and ice fall present significant hazards anywhere downhill from ridges and rock outcroppings. Limit your time, and move quickly through these areas.

    Wet loose avalanche activity is possible below and near treeline on all aspects. This problem will likely reach its max likelihood and sensitivity in the mid-afternoon, during peak daytime temperatures. Last night, temperatures remained above freezing as high as 9,000 feet, meaning that surface snow will start out soft, speeding up the development of warming instability. All that being said, activity is expected to be minimal. Early signs will first show on solar slopes, presenting as roller balls, failing test slopes, and mushy unsupportable surface snow. To avoid this problem, exit steep slopes before peak daytime temperatures. Once the surface snow feels wet and unsupportable, it's time to move to terrain below 30 degrees. With temperatures expected to cool tonight, this problem will decrease in likelihood.

    Cornice fall continues to be an issue across the forecast area as warm temperatures and direct sunlight persist. Over the last five days, forecasters have witnessed numerous large, collapsed or sagging cornices on all aspects. The largest cornices tend to be on north facing terrain, where some are as large as small school buses. If these cornices fail, they have the potential to crush/kill someone below, and trigger a subsequent wet avalanche. The best way to avoid this issue is limiting your exposure. While travelling along ridge lines, step extra far back from the cornice edge. When failure occurs, cornices notoriously pull snow further back than expected. If you need to travel under a cornice, move fast and don't stop directly underneath.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday, forecasters traveled to the upper Old Ski Bowl in search of warming instability and to assess upper mountain conditions. Surface snow was soft to 10,000 feet, providing excellent skiing/snowmobiling conditions. Observed surfaces are surprisingly smooth, with very little wind effect. A steady west wind helped to keep surfaces from getting excessively warm. No significant signs of warming instability were observed. The upper mountain still has a large amount of rime ice on the usual cliff bands (Casaval, Red Banks, Trinity Chutes, Shastarama, Green Butte Ridge).

The final avalanche forecast of the 2024/25 season will be issued on Sunday, April 13. After that, the forecasters will shift their focus to climbing operations, as we anticipate a long and busy climbing season. Rangers will continue to post observations, climbing route condition reports, weather trends, photos, and more to the Climbing Advisory and Observations tab.
