Generally safe avalanche conditions exist across the forecast area. Watch for unstable snow in isolated terrain features such as gullies, couloirs, and very steep slopes. Snow depth varies based on location and elevation, thus general caution is advised. This is the first avalanche forecast of the 2024/25 winter season.

The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center would like to welcome everyone back for the 2024/25 winter season. Forecasters have dusted off their computers, gassed up the snowmobiles, waxed the skis, and are ready to go! So, without further ado, let's get into it:

If you live in the Mount Shasta area, you know that winter started a little earlier than expected. About 10 days ago, a large atmospheric river deposited multiple feet of new snow across the forecast area, jump-starting the snowpack to what resembles early January 2024. Weather has calmed down a lot since then, giving us time to step out and assess the current mountain conditions. Snow coverage starts as low as 4,000 feet but becomes consistent above 4,500 feet. Forecasters found a snow depth of 150 cm at 7,800 feet, and 195 cm at 9,800 feet. The current snowpack is made up of heavy, dense snow split up by a few crust layers. The dense snow will serve as an excellent base for storms to come. 

All that being said, general caution should be taken across the forecast area. Believe it or not, it is still early season, and unexpected hazards are abundant out there. Though unlikely, small pockets of wind-loaded snow could still be lingering in the upper reaches of Mount Shasta. Double-check your gear, and approach the mountains slowly.

Regarding snow conditions, cold, dry snow has remained preserved in shaded and wind-sheltered areas. In lower elevations, where the inversion has prevented warming, soft snow could also still exist. The majority of terrain above treeline has some level of wind effected surface snow. On solar aspects, a thin solar crust has begun to develop, With warm daytime temperatures, this crust will become more pronounced.
