Mount Shasta

Today's primary hazard won't be avalanches, but rather challenging and dangerous snow surfaces. Mount Shasta is hosting very icy conditions. There are moments in mountaineering when, one must not fall. This sentiment is ringing true above treeline. In addition, rime ice is plastered to exposed rocks, creating overhead hazard as it melts in the sun and tumbles down slopes below. A weekend of nice weather may lure climbers onto the mountain, and thus...you have been warned. Be safe up there, gang. Conditions like this should be taken seriously. A proper ice axe, 12-point crampons and helmet are mandatory.

Avalanche danger is minimal today, but climbing conditions remain dangerous with icy "slide-for-life" snow surfaces. Winter climbing on the mountain brings added hazards compared to the milder conditions of spring, so experience and preparation are essential.  Bunny Flat is the only open trailhead at this time. If you plan to ascend above 10,000 feet, remember to bring your summit pass. Additionally, packing out your human waste is required within the Mount Shasta Wilderness Area.

Aside from the icy surfaces, other areas feature a mix of breakable crusts and wind-hardened snow. Near and below treeline, you may find pockets of soft snow in select areas. However, there hasn't been significant precipitation since January 3rd. Near treeline on Mount Shasta, 85 inches of snow remain, with nearly a foot of settlement in the past two weeks. On the west side, about 60 inches of snow is reporting in the Castle Lake and Eddy Mountains. Conditions are worn, but the days are stunning, and we encourage you to get outside for a walk or ride and enjoy the fresh air. Just exercise caution on your descent!
