Mount Shasta

Avalanche danger is low. The primary hazard remains firm, slippery alpine surfaces that could lead to a traumatic fall. In addition, partially exposed rocks and other obstacles are widespread throughout the snowpack. Proper gear and careful terrain selection are key to safe travel.

Given unseasonably warm temperatures and minimal overnight refreezing, small wet loose avalanches in steep, isolated alpine terrain are possible, though unlikely. If traveling on snow or at higher elevations on Mt. Shasta, ensure your skills match the terrain. Many snow-covered slopes may appear straightforward but carry significant consequences. On firm surfaces, a slip or fall could result in serious injury due to exposed rocks and thin snow cover. Avoid committing to terrain you cannot safely retreat from. Sturdy mountain boots and hiking poles can make a significant difference—an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Climbers:Today is the last day of reasonably favorable weather. On all routes, expect the potential for rockfall, icefall, and slick, slide-for-life conditions on the upper mountain. A full mountaineering kit is required: 12-point crampons (NOT microspikes), an ice axe, a helmet, and the skills to use them properly.

Snow is returning to the forecast after an extended dry spell, but consistent coverage still requires some effort to reach. From Bunny Flat, expect bare-ground hiking to nearly 8,500 feet in Avalanche Gulch. Snowlines are lower on the east side of the mountain, where Brewer Creek Trailhead offers easier, dirt-free access. Snow depth increases with elevation, on shadier aspects, and in wind-loaded features. Surface conditions are variable, including wind-textured snow, firm and icy melt-freeze crusts, and moist December “corn” once the sun softens mid-elevation solar aspects. Exposed and shallowly buried obstacles are widespread. In the Eddy Mountains, remaining snow is limited to the highest north-facing terrain.

All trailheads are still accessible. The last mile of the road to the Clear Creek trailhead is 4x4 only.
