Generally safe avalanche conditions exist throughout the forecast region.

Warm weather has given rise to a wet-loose avalanche problem near and below treeline on west, south, and east aspects. Human triggered avalanches are possible on slopes steeper than 30 degrees that hold wet snow. Evaluate snow conditions as you travel. Decrease your exposure by steering clear of slopes presenting signs and symptoms of instabilities, such as, roller balls and point releases.

    A wet-loose avalanche problem has developed due to consecutive days of warm weather, affecting near and below treeline areas on east, south, and west aspects. Forecasters triggered multiple small wet-loose slides yesterday on a southeast aspect near treeline with five inches of damp surface snow. Similar conditions today will make wet-loose slides possible on slopes steeper than 30 degrees that receive direct sunlight or hold damp snow. Wet snow on a steep slope is hazardous. Anticipate where wet surfaces may be. Snow conditions can change fast over very little time and distance. Even small slides can have serious consequences. Watch for point releases and roller balls as signs of increasing instability. Manage time and terrain carefully.

Avalanche Discussion

The forecast region is currently at low avalanche danger. This does not mean danger is absent. If you're venturing into remote or extreme terrain, be prepared to self-evaluate snow and weather conditions.

The wind slab problem has been removed from the forecast. While there's always some uncertainty in doing so, we’ve seen no recent avalanches or signs of instability, and warm weather has helped bond surfaces with no additional loading.

As we enter a period of stable weather and a relatively safe snowpack, it's important to approach the mountains with both confidence and caution. Mount Shasta offers plenty above 10,000 feet, whether it's climbing or skiing, or both! Don't let complacency get the best of you.
