Points saillants

Rain/snow and gale to severe gale Northerly winds are forecast on Wednesday.

Multiple avalanche problems may develop (Wind Slab,Wet Slab and Loose Wet).

Be prepared to alter your plans if conditions are deteriorating.

Problèmes avalancheux

  • Wind Slabs

    • Toutes altitudes
    Probabilité
    Possible
    Taille
    1.5

Rising Northerly winds may transport snow and create pockets of Wind Slab. These slabs are most likely to form on South facing slopes above about 1700m. Stay clear of ridge line entry points and other steep unsupported ground if you encounter stiff, wind driven snow.

  • Wet Slabs

    • Toutes altitudes
    Probabilité
    Possible
    Taille
    1.5

The likelihood of wet slides (Wet Slab and Loose Wet) will increase as rain penetrates the snowpack. This activity could occur on any aspect below about 2000m. If persistent rain appears likely, best put your travel plans on hold.

Recent Avalanche Activity

Loose Wet avalanche activity (size 1 and 2) at Treble Cone last weekend. A cycle of Loose Wet avalanches has occurred in the back country

If you see evidence of avalanches in the back country please enter a Public Observation.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Some fresh snow (20 - 30cm) 8th/9th August. The underlying pack is mostly well consolidated. Having said that, facets and depth hoar (weak, sugary forms) have been found in places. These pockets of questionable strength appear to be reasonably isolated and are most likely to exist on slopes facing East to South. You would be wise to do some investigation before committing to steep, shady terrain.

Mountain Weather

Wednesday - rain developing in the morning falling as snow down to 1700m. Northerly gales rising to severe gale 120 kph. Freezing level - 1600m climbing to 2000m in the afternoon.

Sliding Danger

Some fresh snow over the weekend will have reduced the sliding danger. However, keep in mind that the underlying pack remains shallow especially, at lower elevations. Rocks and icy areas may be lurking below a thin cover of fresh snow.

Forecast Confidence

Moderate

  • We are confident the likelihood of avalanches will increase with the forecast weather.
  • We are uncertain due to variable freezing levels.
