New snow overnight has seen the avalanche hazard shift mainly to Easterly aspects. Especially given the wind strength from the south collecting previously deposited snow, helping increase the size and depth of this new wind slab. This will continue for Saturday before we see a clearance on Sunday. Caution for any travel on the mountain is needed, remembering wind-stripped areas will be firm underfoot, plus the varied depth and shape of wind slab on leeward aspects. Avalanche rescue equipment along with your crampons and ice axe are essential for Taranaki; it seems an odd mix but this is the case for the varied conditions you are likely to come across.
