Highlights

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Human triggered avalanches are likely due to the combination of snowfall, wind loading, and buried weak layers. Riders can trigger avalanches remotely-from flatter terrain below, above, and to the sides of steep slopes. Travel in avalanche terrain is not advised.

    Weak sugary snow that formed in late October and early November is now covered by several feet of snow at the upper elevations.  The Greys River zone received around 8 inches of snow with 0.5 inches of snow water equivalent in the last 24 hrs. Winds were in the 20-30 mph range with higher gusts. Slab depths could be up to 4 ft deep and triggered remotely (from flatter terrain below, above, and to the sides of steep slopes).

    The Greys River zone received around 8 inches of snow with 0.5 inches of snow water equivalent in the last 24 hrs. Winds were in the 20-30 mph range with higher gusts. Wind slab depths could be up to 2 ft thick and step down to weaker layers within the old snow. 

     

Avalanche Discussion

While the Greys/SW trails ranges didn't receive as much snow as the Tetons, the new snow fell on well developed and documented persistent weak layers. These buried weak layers have been producing natural avalanche activity over the last few days and today shouldn't be any different.

Yesterday a rider triggered an avalanche near Relay Ridge in the Big Holes. This area of the Snake River Range is outside the forecast area, but it contains a similar snow structure to other areas in the Palisades, Snake Rivers, Salts, and Greys River. Reports of remote triggering in and around the various drainages of the Palisades range are cause for concern, as many of these drainages are quite low in elevation.
