Regions

South Rockies, Dogtooth, East Purcell, Bull, Elkford East, Elkford West.

Shaded upper-elevation slopes may still offer soft, dry snow and fairly good riding conditions.

Avalanche activity is unlikely; normal caution remains appropriate.

Confidence

High

  • We are confident due to a stable weather pattern.

Avalanche Summary

There are no new avalanche observations.

Avalanche activity is considered unlikely at this time. The danger is expected to remain low until the weather pattern shifts to bring more precipitation.

Snowpack Summary

Widespread surface hoar growth continues across the region. Otherwise, a surface crust caps the snowpack, except for on upper-elevation shady north through east-facing slopes, where some wind-affected powder may provide decent riding and ski conditions. Small, stubborn wind slabs may also remain in these areas.

On south-facing slopes, the crust may soften and melt for a short time on steep sunny slopes.

Two notable buried layers persist, but are currently not affecting stability:

  • A layer of surface hoar or a sun crust buried 25-60 cm deep.

  • A crust with facets can be found near the base of the snowpack (persisting in shallow areas).

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Periods of low danger may be a good time to increase your exposure.
  • A hard crust on the snow surface will help strengthen the snowpack, but may cause tough travel conditions.
  • Small avalanches can have serious consequences in extreme terrain. Carefully evaluate your line for slabs before you commit to it.
  • Pay attention to isolated wind affected features in the alpine, as well as cross-loaded features at treeline.
