Highlights

Above 8,500 feet, skiers and riders could trigger pockets of wind slab. On sunlit aspects, extended periods of sunshine could increase the likelihood of these slides along with the chance of sluffing of the new snow. While frozen, the snowpack below 8,500 feet is mostly stable and avalanches are unlikely. If significant warming occurs and the snowpack becomes unsupportable, wet slides could become possible.

    Recently developed, dense wind slabs lie upon hard snow surfaces. Backcountry travelers venturing into steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain could trigger these slides to depths of 18 inches on a variety of aspects at the higher elevations.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )As a powerful low pressure system tracks south of the forecast area, snowfall will decrease first in the Tetons followed by the Greys River and Togwotee Pass areas. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near 10 before rising into the low 20s during the day. Northeasterly ridgetop winds will range from 20 to 30 miles per hour.The General Avalanche Hazard is expected to be MODERATE on Tuesday in the Tetons and Greys River area. There, backcountry travelers could trigger pockets of wind slab twelve to eighteen inches in depth in steep, wind loaded terrain above 9,000 feet. Any extended periods of sunshine will increase the likelihood of triggering these slides and also bring about the chance for sluffing of the new snow.In the Togwotee Pass area, where less snow fell, the snowpack is mostly stable and avalanches are unlikely except for very shallow sluffing of the new snow if the sun comes out. There, the General Avalanche Hazard is expected to be LOW.
