Highlights

The wet snow avalanche hazard will increase as the day warms and surface crusts break down. On steep solar aspects, skiers and riders could encounter small wet slides and cornices failing in the afternoon. Small natural slides could occur on steep road cuts and in cliff areas. Slopes prone to glide crack avalanches should also be avoided during the warmest periods of the day. Large deep persistent slab avalanches are unlikely but still a potential threat. Due to the substantial consequences of being involved in one of these dangerous slides a conservative approach to steep, suspect slopes is warranted. Although the snowpack is mostly stable, a small slide in serious terrain could have severe consequences if a rider is swept over a cliff, down a steep couloir, or into a terrain trap. Monitor conditions for wet snow avalanches, and as the snow surface softens and loses cohesion, avoid steep sunlit slopes.

    No large slab avalanches have been reported in over two weeks. Although these dangerous slides are unlikely some potential may remain for backcountry travelers to trigger deep persistent slab avalanches on buried layers of faceted snow. A larger trigger like a snowmobile or a cornice drop may be necessary to trigger one of these deep slab avalanches. They could occur on slopes that have been previously tracked. These low probability high consequence slides could be 3 to 5 feet deep and cause serious injury or death.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Skies are expected to be mostly clear to partly cloudy with the cloud cover favoring the eastern portion of the forecast area. Temperatures will start out in the mid to upper teens and then warm into the 30s in the mountains and 40s in the valleys. Light westerly winds are expected along high ridges and summits. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Low in all the forecast areas. Daily warming will increase the avalanche hazard throughout the day and the potential for wet snow slides. Wet avalanche activity will be most likely found on steep solar aspects, especially where the snowpack is thin with exposed rocks. Below 8,000 feet, areas of isothermal snowpack are developing and could result in wet loose slides. In the Grey’s River and Togwotee Pass forecast areas, it is unlikely but there remains the possibility for a deep slab avalanche, up to 5 feet deep, to be triggered by a snowmobile crossing the thin spot of the slab or a large cornice drop.
