Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Soft slabs 10-50cm overlay a buried surface hoar layer. A shift to winds from the NE may create slabs in areas that do not normally get high snow load. Saturday, a size 2 slab was observed on a convex roll at treeline on this layer.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

Increased loads with wind or new snow may awaken this instability. Gully features in the alpine and treeline which have been heavily loaded may step down to this layer.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 4
